Wow, What a Great Lobby!
This last weekend as we were looking for something to do Drew found a nifty little advertisement for Open House New York. Its a weekend where buildings that are usually not open to the public are opened for limited hours. We decided to go see the Chrysler building, but got a very late start. In fact we didn’t get out of the apartment until after 3:00 PM. (I got distracted making cupcakes and Drew was distracted doing something on his computer.) Even though the building closed to the public at 4:00 PM we thought we’d give it a try. (Its not like one of us is in grad school or the other one isn’t busy running a web based marketing campaign or anything.)
So, we called our friend Brandon, who wanted to come with and let him know we were on our way out the door. We all made our way to the subway station and caught a train. As it was the weekend, all trains were making all stops so the commute to midtown took longer than expected. Once we got off at the Times Square stop we had about 12 minutes to go 4 blocks. Now this would have been fine if the blocks were a normal size, but they weren’t. The blocks were the ones in between the avenues, which are about twice as long as normal city blocks. Not to mention, we were in Times Square, so there were lots and lots of people to run around on our way there.
After running/speed walking around people and through traffic we made it!! We had four minutes to spare. So we entered the Chrysler building and were able to explore….well not really. The only portion open to the public was the front lobby of the building, which I must say, was quite unimpressive. I am, however, quite glad that I can say that, even though, or maybe especially because, I am only able to do so because of a ridiculous 45 minute journey from the upper west side to midtown.
After our two minute tour of the Chrysler Building lobby (they actually kicked us out at 3:58 PM, TWO minutes early), we grabbed ourselves some Jamba Juice and sat in Bryant park. It was a beautiful day. We saw a man doing a headstand for about 10 minutes which was pretty impressive. And Drew and Brandon had a competition to see who could take the best picture of a random guy in the park….(I don’t know…)
All in all it was a fun day in NYC. (Pictures and video of our adventure are coming!)
