Where it began, I can’t begin to know. Wait a minute. I think it may have all started at a dueling piano bar in Times Square by the name of Sweet Caroline’s.
I had never been to a piano bar before. But, I do have a certain fondness for pianos and I do enjoy bars a good deal, so it seemed like a great idea from the get-go.
This last weekend as we were looking for something to do Drew found a nifty little advertisement for Open House New York. Its a weekend where buildings that are usually not open to the public are opened for limited hours. We decided to go see the Chrysler building, but got a very late start. In fact we didn’t get out of the apartment until after 3:00 PM. (I got distracted making cupcakes and Drew was distracted doing something on his computer.) Even though the building closed to the public at 4:00 PM we thought we’d give it a try. (Its not like one of us is in grad school or the other one isn’t busy running a web based marketing campaign or anything.)
It turns out we live just three blocks from Grant’s Tomb, the largest mausoleum in America (and the second largest in the Western Hemisphere). Creepy? A little. Cool? Absolutely.
Some of the more interesting facts I learned about the 18th President of the United States:
I’m taking some time away from my studying and cleaning to reflect a bit on the past week since I last blogged. Okay not really taking time away from as much as postponing my studying and cleaning…
Drew recently posted about our Saturday of running and giant pianos. Seriously, I loved the FAO Shcwarz store. It was so much fun. If people come and visit I think I might make them go there. I mean its free and you get to play on a giant piano. Its fabulous!
But Drew already wrote about that so I will talk a little about what we did last weekend. We went to the world famous Lenox Lounge.
I woke up this morning and started to prepare for my first race in exactly 364 days (the last race being the 2006 Twin Cities Marathon 5K Run/Walk which I completed in a tidy 20:00). I’d like to say I planned it that way…you know, for dramatic effect and to keep up my two race/year average.
Nevertheless, the old pre-race habits came back right away: lace up shoes, attach timing chip, crumple up race number and put in mouth, eat a box of Kraft Mac and Cheese (OK, I threw that one in for fun).
Part of the fun of moving to a new city is that you get a blank slate - a chance to start all over again. After moving to New York, I really wanted to get back into a regular running routine. Thankfully, our proximity to Central Park has encouraged me to bust out the sneakers on a more frequent basis (thanks for the new Nikes Hubley).
From our front door, it takes me about 5-10 minutes to jog to the northwest corner of the Park (assuming I don’t stop at one of the local pizza places). Windy roads meander around the circumference of Central Park, providing plenty of space for joggers and bicyclists. And there’s always a lot of people out running, so it’s nice to have some people to chase after.

Its been a month since Drew and I were married in the beautiful Cathedral of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. So, I felt I should comment on how the first month of married life has been.
First of all, I must say it still feels very surreal, as though it didn’t really happen and we aren’t really married. The wedding day was fabulous. But, it was over so fast, it seemed like a dream (a dweam wif in a dweam). And then the week between the wedding and moving to NYC just seemed like a trip to Sioux Falls. And these past few weeks we have been living in New York City, where it seems like we are just visiting. However, I just received my New York State Driver’s License in the mail today. It had my new last name and my new address on it. I guess this is for real.
Sorry for the long delay between my posts. I have a fear of being too boring on my posts, so I tend not to write. I will try to over come this fear in the next two years. Hopefully, soon I will be a posting madwoman with long detailed boring events written up for you non-stop.
A lot has gone on in the week and a half since I last wrote. As you can see from the spectacular video montage that Drew posted, he and I went to the Bronx Zoo. (Thanks Alaina, Dani, Lindsey and Steve!!) It was a lot of fun. We were able to check out all of the exciting attractions the zoo offers including the skyfari, the Asia Monorail, the Bug Carousel and the Gorilla exhibit.
I think my favorite was the bug carousel. I mean, we got to sit on giant bugs, and go round in circles for a good five minutes, how could that not be awesome?
I started my Friday evening by scoping out some watering holes on Yahoo Maps. I found an area on the Upper West Side that seemed to have quite a few places to offer. I scratched down a few names and addresses on a note card and Anna and I headed out (after a few outfit changes).
Our first stop was Bourbon St. on Amsterdam between 79th and 80th Street. Their Web site was extremely influential in making it the first on our mini pub crawl. There’s something about “Cheap Bud” in 50-point font that really grabs you by the cullions.
